Well, well, well! Here we are again talking about more interior design. However, this time, I will let you in on the secrets of choosing the perfect floor for you. If you are thinking “how would she know?” Well I can tell you, every woman who is looking to refurbish or move into a new house knows! It is almost part of our DNA; we just know which floor we want.
I did get a little overwhelmed and almost confused as to what the difference is in some of them. So here a little guide to flooring.
Wooden flooring– Oh, good – old wooden flooring. You can’t really go wrong with wood, can you? Ha! I am sorry to tell you that you can. Choosing the right wooden flooring is not as easy as it initially looks. There is a wide range of different flooring (types within types within types) – so your decision really has to come down to color, functionality and in most cases budget!
Laminate flooring– laminate flooring is a really good alternative if your budget is a little more modest, but you’d still like to have that wooden feel. With some types, you can’t really tell that it’s not the real deal. However, be careful where you want to place your laminate. If you are thinking the kitchen (or bathroom) would look lovely with new laminate flooring, then make sure you get the one that is sealed. Why? Well you really need one that is water-resistant. The bottom line of laminate is pressed sheets of paper – so try dipping a little bit of paper into water and see what happens!
Engineered wood flooring– This type should not be confused with laminate or any vinyl flooring. You wouldn’t believe it but most probably you have walked over this type of floor a million times. It is the most common wood floor used globally. I do not want to get too technical but it consists of 2 layers. The beautiful shiny layer is the one you can see, which sits on one or more plank like layers. It is far more durable than laminate but still cheaper than solid wood.
Solid Wood Flooring– This really is what it says on the tin – Wood! The most common types of real wood flooring are Oak, Ash, Walnut and Bamboo (yep, you read right!). Well if you have the budget then why not? Be warned, it is not cheap! Have you ever tried to buy a piece of walnut wood furniture? Now multiply that in sq.ft.For additional tips, visit http://www.theflooringlady.com/
Tiled flooring– Who needs wooden flooring, right? If you want to go ultra-modern you could go for tiles. Don’t think it is an easier choice here. There are many different types such as ceramic tiles, stone tiles or even tile effect laminate. It can get just as confusing. You have to know how you will be using the room you want tiled.
This is because some tiles are not meant for heavy use such as pushing furniture around on them. Some tiles are soft which means it will leave rather ugly marks. However, if you are thinking of getting under floor heating installed then tiles are perfect! Some people think they do not have character and can make a room look a little cold.
Vinyl flooring– Vinyl is really great for the a modest budget – not only is it available in almost any flooring type that I already described, it is durable and you can put it wherever you want in your house. The only thing I would recommend is getting an expert installing it. Why? Well I still have the picture of my father installing the vinyl floor in our bathroom, when I was a kid.
Carpeted flooring– I love the feeling of walking on carpet. My friend has the most gorgeous carpet in her bedroom and your feet just sink into it. Like the other flooring potions you must choose a different carpet for different situations. Although her nice and fluffy carpet is amazing, my cat would take it apart in minutes. They will also be able to advise you, which underlay you will need – this is almost like a carpet for the carpet. It makes sure that your carpet last for longer and doesn’t lose its bounce. If you have pets and kids – you might want to go with a carpet that is easily cleaned and that withstands marks from little feet!
